Search Engine Optimization FAQ

This document is just getting started - overtime it will cover all aspects of Search Engine Optimization in-depth.

Figure out your keywords

Brain storm all the possible keywords someone might search for what you offer on your website. Put these in a document - or better yet an Excel spreadsheet.

Note: Keywords refer to a complete search string or phrase - whether it be a single word or seven.

Use the Overture Keyword Suggestion Tool to help determine additional keywords.

You can also run your existing keyword through to the tool to find out if they've been searched for. If the tool indicates no one has searched for the term in the last month - you may want to consider dropping it from the list unless you specifically know it to be of value.

In general - the longer your list of possible keywords the better. If a keyword gets at least -some- traffic - it's probably worth keeping on your list.

Some of the keywords generated by the tool may seem non-sensical. Sometimes the keywords are out of order - and you just need to sort them out. If something really makes no sense - remove it.

Go through the list and add the plural versions of any keywords where appropriate.

Review your list of keywords and verify they all -really- describe what you offer on your site. Remove any that don't.
